Additive Technology

At OrthoAdditive Africa, we make use of an array of digital fabrication systems to make things happen

HP MultiJet fusion

MultiJet Fusion (MJF) is a 3D printing technology developed by HP (Hewlett-Packard) that combines inkjet printing and powdered material fusion to create three-dimensional objects. In MJF, a print head with multiple nozzles deposits liquid binding agents and fusing agents onto a thin layer of powdered material. The binding agent helps selectively bind the particles together, while the fusing agent promotes the fusion and solidification of the material. After each layer is printed, a heat source or infrared lamps apply energy to the powdered material, causing it to fuse and form a solid part. MJF offers high printing speeds, excellent resolution, and the ability to produce functional parts with intricate details. It supports a variety of materials, including thermoplastics, and finds applications in industries such as manufacturing, prototyping, and product development.

Shining Einscan

Shining Einscan is a handheld 3D scanner used at OrthoAdditive Africa to scan patients or casts quickly and accurately. It can capture textured and textureless objects, making it ideal for intricate details and complex geometries. We use the Shining Einscan to create high-resolution 3D models of our patients' limbs or other body parts that require orthotic or prosthetic devices. This technology allows us to create more comfortable, functional, custom-fitted patient devices.

Oqton Freeform

Oqton Geomagic Freeform Plus, developed by 3D Systems, is a powerful software package for digital sculpting and organic modelling. It provides a comprehensive set of tools and features that enable artists, designers, and engineers to create complex, highly detailed 3D models focusing on freeform, artistic expression. Geomagic Freeform Plus offers a variety of sculpting brushes and intuitive workflows, allowing users to shape, manipulate, and refine their designs digitally. It also supports integrating haptic devices, providing a tactile feedback experience for a more immersive sculpting process. Additionally, the software includes powerful surfacing and detailing tools, enabling users to create intricate textures, patterns, and precise geometries. Geomagic Freeform Plus is widely used in entertainment, jewellery, automotive design, and product development, where artistic expression and intricate design are key factors.EOS Stereo

Lithography Sintering (SLS)

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D printing is an additive manufacturing technique that utilises a high-powered laser to fuse powdered materials together, layer by layer, to create three-dimensional objects. Unlike other 3D printing methods, SLS does not require support structures, as unused powder acts as a self-supporting medium during printing. The laser selectively melts or sinters the powdered material according to the desired design, creating complex geometries and intricate details. SLS 3D printing offers versatility in material choices, including plastics, metals, and ceramics, making it suitable for various applications across industries such as automotive, aerospace, healthcare, and consumer products.

In-house built Functional Deposition Modelling (FDM) systems

We utilise and maintain several in-house FDM/FFF 3D printers, enabling us to use cost-effective materials to produce an array of possibilities, from foot orthotics to test sockets and beyond. Some printers are commercial-grade machines, whereas others are open-platform systems that anyone with technical experience can build and use in their practices.

PA11/12 Nylon high durability materials

PA12 nylon powder, or polyamide 12 powder, is commonly used in MultiJet Fusion (MJF) 3D printing technology. It is a thermoplastic polymer with excellent mechanical properties, durability, and chemical resistance. PA12 nylon powder is known for its high strength-to-weight ratio, making it suitable for applications that require robust and lightweight parts. It exhibits good thermal stability and can withstand high temperatures without significant deformation. PA12 nylon powder is often used in automotive, aerospace, consumer goods, and manufacturing industries, where functional prototypes, end-use parts, and production tools are required. It's versatility, and favourable characteristics make it suitable for various applications, including complex geometries, snap-fit assemblies, enclosures, and jigs and fixtures. The MJF process allows for precise control over the powder deposition and energy application, resulting in high-quality PA12 nylon prints with excellent surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

TPU

Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) is a versatile material widely used in the orthotic and prosthetic profession due to its unique properties. TPU is a flexible, elastic material with excellent durability, impact resistance, and shock absorption. It is also known for its high elongation at break, which allows it to stretch without permanent deformation. These characteristics make TPU ideal for creating customised orthotic and prosthetic devices that require support, comfort, and flexibility.
